Drama Ministry is considered a major way to reach younger members of the church and families of school age kids. If you google it you will find all types of information out there.

My background is in children's theater. I love Christmas Pageant time at church. Cool that you are costuming.

Clever of you and very cool. My 13 yr old daughter is into drama too, so I'm often a stagemom. This summer, in addition to VBS, I'm costuming the Stroyka Theater production of Chess the Musical which will be opening 18 Sept at the US Navy memorial on PA Ave in DC. I didn't know there was something called "drama ministry" seems like a natural for my family.

I do drama ministry and I was on the Metro DC Synod ELCA website where I got the listings of the churches in the conference and links to their websites. I was looking to see who was using drama ministry. Our project tied into the VBS theme this year so scenery overlapped. I made a note of who else was doing Discovery Canyon. (Also saw many others doing the same type of other theme through Group publishing. ) I started to make note of it.

You learn a lot in the first year. (I grew up in a family big into Christian Education so a lot of it is second nature now.) I can suggest a $25 fee for registration (maybe offer it lower or free for families in financial hardship). But the $25 gives you money to purchase the materials, snacks, decorations, etc. and if you have money left over than it goes to the mission project.

Thank you THANK YOU thank you for all the details. I'll pursue every avenue. And yes, I agree we should get together early next year. My husband and I just retired from the govt so we are fresh "meat" and ignorant. This is our first shot at running VBS. How did you learn which local churches were doing Discovery Canyon?

I'm sorry when I said this week, I was referring to the week that you listed. (And well we have loaned them out for this week too.)

We did use some of the Cars canyon stuff (it doesn't have the cars on them.) But also these:

What I did do a few days ago was sent out an invite to other churches still doing VBS in August. There are a few churches that are over lapping that start on August 10th. Maybe one of them can go in with you on purchasing some and sharing it. Or, in this following list are other churches that I found are in the midst of it now or will be the week before you (It's all Metro DC churches)
Michelle’s Church starts July 27 ----------------- They have a lot of the scenery right now, and some spare materials that we had leftover from our week

The next church is the one borrowing all our stuff that is the same week as yours.

I know Resurrection in Arlington is doing there's in the evening this week.

WHAT I REALLY SUGGEST FOR NEXT YEAR --- we all hold on to each other's names, churches, etc. and work together to create scenery and decorations etc. Maybe do training of teachers together too. I used to be in a synod in Ohio that did this. Kept costs way down, and they pooled talent together to create more durable stuff that traveled.

We made Bryce Canyon type hoodoos or cairns that can be shared before or after our VBS which is 3-7 Aug. by stacking cardboard boxes, using masking tape on the seams to keep them stacked and rolling latex paint on them in "strata." We won't be needing them till the final days before our VBS which is 3-7 Aug. (OK, to be honest, they don't look much like hoodoos without lots of imagination :-) but it's all I can offer at this point.)

I saw those online - the scene setter is from the Disney movie "Cars" right? I'll run to the local party stores this week. My problem is we had no budget for this and didn't realize it when we announced we were only charging $10 per child. That just covers the critter/pouch/pack expenses. When you get back what we've loaned out, may we borrow them next?
LisaW Comment by LisaW on July 22, 2009 at 7:21am
Rosario,
We have loaned out things for this week to another church. We found scene setter plastic roll sheeting at the Party Stores on the canyon and desert themes. It was so convenient. I posted in the decorating ideas areas links to them. But if you can't find that let me know.
Peace,
Lisa

Gloria Dei! Lutheran church in Arnold MD is doing Discovery Canyon 3-7 August. We are busy decorating now. We've built hoodoos out of cardboard boxes and paint. Can;t find refrigerator size boxes for the backdrops though. We are using the biggest boxes we could find to line along the classroom hallway to simulate canyon walls for very little people. Would welcome any leftover decoration!

We are having it July 6th - 10th. And we are working in cooperation with another area church too.

We will have while set decorating work days starting next weekend.
